Take a look at my photography!

There’s something unforgettable about graduation photos that break away from tradition, and this particular shoot takes that idea and runs with it, literally, onto a trampoline placed right in the middle of campus. At first glance, it sounds almost too playful for such a milestone moment, but that contrast is exactly what makes the story behind this image so compelling.
The photo captures two college graduates dressed in full academic regalia…gowns flowing mid-air, and stols suspended in that brief moment between gravity and weightlessness. Instead of the typical posed stance in front of a university building or a carefully arranged portrait with diplomas in hand, these two friends are mid-jump on a trampoline, frozen in a frame of pure joy. Their expressions are not the practiced smiles of formal photography but the unfiltered laughter that comes from shared excitement and a bit of chaos.
What makes this shoot stand out is not just the trampoline itself, but the intention behind it. Graduation is often portrayed as a formal culmination of years of hard work, discipline, and academic achievement. While those elements are certainly important, they don’t fully capture the lived experience of students. The friendships formed, the stress endured, the late-night study sessions, or the spontaneous moments of joy in between is harder to communicate through a lens. This image leans into those lighter, more human aspects of the journey.
The trampoline transforms the setting into something symbolic. Each jump represents more than just physical movement; it becomes a metaphor for the uncertainty and exhilaration of stepping into the next chapter of life. There’s a sense of weightlessness that mirrors the emotional transition graduates often feel…no longer grounded in the structure of college life, but not yet fully anchored in what comes next. In that in-between space, there is freedom, excitement, and yes, a little bit of nervous energy.
From a storytelling perspective, the choice to use a trampoline also adds an element of spontaneity that traditional graduation photography often lacks. Instead of static poses, the camera captures motion, unpredictability, and authenticity. The gowns billow in unexpected ways, caps threaten to fly off, and the graduates’ feet never quite touch the ground at the same time. These imperfections are what give the image its charm. Nothing is overly staged, yet everything feels intentional.
The friendship between the two subjects is also central to the narrative. Graduation is not just an individual milestone; it is deeply communal. Years of shared experiences are condensed into a single moment of celebration. Their synchronized jumping suggests trust and familiarity, an unspoken understanding that they are experiencing this transition together. Whether they are headed in the same direction after graduation or not, this moment freezes their shared journey in a way that words often cannot.
Editing untraditional graduation photos like this one allows for even more creativity. The dynamic movement, vibrant energy, and playful setting open the door for enhancements that emphasize joy and motion rather than perfection. Light adjustments can highlight the brightness of the day, while motion effects or subtle color grading can amplify the sense of celebration. The goal is not to sanitize the image, but to amplify its personality.
Ultimately, this trampoline graduation photo is more than just a fun twist on a classic college portrait. It is a visual reminder that milestones don’t have to be solemn to be meaningful. Joy, laughter, and spontaneity are just as valid a part of achievement as tradition and ceremony. In fact, sometimes they capture the truth of the moment even better.

One of the most unforgettable parts of traveling out West was finally getting the chance to visit Horseshoe Bend in Arizona. It is one of those destinations that almost feels unreal when you first see it in person. Photos online can capture the shape and scale of the overlook, but standing there yourself is an entirely different experience. The massive curve of the canyon carved by the Colorado River stretches out below in a way that immediately makes you stop and take everything in. The landscape feels endless, dramatic, and almost too perfectly formed to be natural.
The hike to the overlook itself builds anticipation. As the desert scenery opens up and the cliffs begin to appear, there is a growing sense that you are approaching something significant. Then suddenly, the full view comes into sight. The deep reddish-orange rock formations contrast against the dark green-blue water below, creating one of the most striking natural color palettes imaginable. The sheer size of the canyon walls and the sharp bend in the river make the entire scene feel larger than life.
At first, it is easy to focus only on the grand scale of the overlook itself. Most visitors stand near the edge, taking photos of the sweeping canyon and the famous horseshoe-shaped curve of the river. But what made the experience especially memorable for me happened when I looked closer toward the water below. Along the bank of the river, I noticed a few tiny boats and scattered groups of people near the shoreline. From that distance, they looked almost miniature against the towering cliffs surrounding them.
That small detail completely changed my perspective of the landscape. Seeing actual people and boats below created a powerful sense of scale that photos alone often fail to communicate. The canyon walls suddenly seemed even taller, the river even wider, and the overlook even more immense. Those tiny figures along the water emphasized just how enormous the environment truly was. It transformed the view from simply “beautiful” into something genuinely humbling.
There is something fascinating about moments like that while traveling. Sometimes the most memorable part of a famous destination is not the landmark itself, but a tiny detail that helps put everything into perspective. Watching the boats move slowly along the river made the landscape feel alive rather than static. It reminded me that while the canyon has existed for millions of years, people still move through it every day, exploring and experiencing it from entirely different viewpoints.
The contrast between human size and natural scale is part of what makes places like Horseshoe Bend so impactful. In everyday life, it is easy to feel surrounded by buildings, schedules, and routines that make the world feel manageable and controlled. Standing above a canyon of that size has the opposite effect. It reminds you how vast nature really is and how small we are in comparison. Instead of feeling insignificant in a negative way, though, it creates a sense of awe and appreciation. There is comfort in realizing the world is much bigger than your daily routine.
Photographing a place like Horseshoe Bend also becomes more meaningful when you notice those smaller details. A wide scenic shot captures the beauty, but spotting the tiny boats below adds a story to the image. It gives viewers something relatable to compare against the cliffs and water, helping them better understand the incredible scale of the environment. Those small human elements make the scene feel even more dramatic and immersive.
Looking back, the trip was memorable for many reasons, but visiting Horseshoe Bend remains one of the standout moments. The overlook was every bit as stunning and impressive as I hoped it would be, yet it was the tiny boats along the riverbank that made the experience truly unforgettable. Sometimes it only takes one small detail to completely transform the way you see a place.

Some of the most meaningful moments to photograph are often the ones that happen quietly in the background. At Woodlands Camp, many of the week’s biggest moments happen during activities filled with energy, games, and loud excitement. But one of the most impactful parts of camp takes place near the very end of the week, when campers gather together to reflect on their experience and share how camp has affected them personally. It is a slower, more emotional moment that carries a completely different kind of energy than the rest of the programming.
During this particular session, campers were taking turns speaking in front of the group about the friendships they made, the lessons they learned, and the ways the week had changed them. As a photographer, my usual position during these moments was behind the campers who were speaking. From there, I could capture the atmosphere of the room and document the vulnerability and courage it takes for someone to stand up and share personal experiences in front of their peers.
After photographing several of these moments in the same way throughout the week, I wanted to try something different. I became curious about the reactions happening on the other side of the stage—the responses from the campers listening rather than the ones speaking. Instead of remaining behind the audience, I quietly moved backstage and positioned myself where I could see the crowd from the speaker’s perspective. That small change completely transformed the story the images were able to tell.
From backstage, the room looked entirely different. Rather than focusing on one camper speaking into a microphone, I could see dozens of reactions unfolding all at once. Some campers were smiling warmly at their friends, others were clapping enthusiastically, and a few looked emotional as they listened to stories that clearly resonated with them. The energy in the room felt deeply supportive and genuine. No one seemed distracted or disengaged; every face reflected attention, encouragement, and connection.
The image captures one of those authentic reactions perfectly. The campers seated in the audience are smiling, applauding, and looking toward the stage with expressions that feel completely natural and unposed. What stands out most is the sense of community visible in the frame. Even though only one person may have been sharing their story at that moment, the reactions from the audience reveal how collective the experience really was. Camp is rarely just about individual growth…it is about shared experiences and the relationships formed through them.
I think that is why stepping backstage felt so important creatively. Sometimes the most powerful part of an event is not the main action everyone expects to photograph, but the emotional responses surrounding it. By changing perspectives, the story became less about a single speaker and more about the atmosphere of encouragement in the room. The applause, eye contact, and smiles all became part of the narrative.
Photographing candid reactions like these also creates a stronger sense of immersion for viewers. Instead of simply observing a person speaking, the audience gets pulled into the emotional environment of the room itself. You can almost feel the warmth, support, and attentiveness shared among the campers. Those subtle expressions often communicate more than words ever could.
Looking back, this image reminds me why I enjoy documentary-style photography so much. Planned shots and perfectly composed portraits certainly have their place, but moments like this are impossible to fully recreate. They happen naturally and last only seconds. Capturing them requires paying attention not only to where everyone else is looking, but also to the quieter moments unfolding just outside the spotlight.
In the end, going backstage gave me more than just a different angle, it revealed a deeper layer of the story. The campers’ reactions became just as meaningful as the testimonies being shared, and the photo now serves as a reminder that sometimes the strongest moments of connection happen in the audience, not just on the stage.

One of the most unique perspectives I experienced while photographing at Woodlands Camp came from a place most campers would probably never notice—the editing room overlooking the main session space. Hidden behind the scenes, this small room had a tiny window that provided a completely different view of the morning worship and programming. While most people in the room were immersed in the energy of the session itself, I had the opportunity to step back and observe everything from above, watching the atmosphere unfold through the lens of both a camera and a storyteller.
Every morning session at camp carried its own kind of energy, but there was something especially powerful about seeing the entire room from this elevated perspective. From the editing room window, you could see the crowd of campers packed tightly near the stage, hands raised, voices singing together, and groups of friends jumping in rhythm with the music. The room felt alive with movement and excitement. Colored stage lights cut through the darkness while music echoed throughout the building, creating a moment that felt both chaotic and unified at the same time.
What stood out most was the genuine enthusiasm coming from the campers. No one appeared self-conscious or distracted. They were fully engaged in the experience—dancing, singing, clapping, and celebrating together with a level of freedom that is difficult to replicate outside of environments like camp. Moments like this are part of what makes summer camp experiences so memorable. There is a sense of openness and collective joy that encourages people to let go of their normal routines and fully participate in the moment.
From a photography perspective, the view from the editing room created an opportunity to capture the scale of that energy in a way that would have been impossible from the floor. Standing within the crowd can produce intimate images filled with emotion and movement, but stepping back allowed me to tell a larger story. From above, the stage, lighting, performers, and audience all came together in a single frame. Instead of focusing on one camper or one interaction, the image documents the atmosphere of the entire room.
The composition itself reflects that balance between individual and collective experience. You can still pick out small moments within the crowd—campers pointing toward the stage, groups jumping together, hands raised during worship—but those individual details become part of something much bigger. The image communicates not only what the session looked like, but what it felt like to be there. There is movement in nearly every corner of the frame, giving the photo a sense of constant motion and excitement.
One of my favorite parts of photography is finding unexpected vantage points like this. Sometimes the best storytelling opportunities come from locations people overlook entirely. A tiny backstage window may not seem important at first, but it offered a perspective that transformed an already exciting moment into something visually dynamic and immersive. It also reminded me that photography is often about curiosity—choosing to explore a different angle instead of settling for the obvious shot.
The lighting in the room added another layer to the atmosphere. The bright stage lights illuminated the performers while the audience remained partially shadowed, creating contrast that naturally directed attention toward the center of the action. At the same time, the glow of red and white lighting across the crowd emphasized the excitement and movement happening below. Combined with the haze and stage effects, the entire room almost felt cinematic.
Beyond the technical and visual aspects, though, what makes this image meaningful is the emotion attached to it. It captures campers joyfully worshipping, singing together, and sharing an experience that clearly meant something to them. There is an authenticity in moments like these that cannot be staged. The excitement, celebration, and energy were completely real, and being able to document that from such a unique perspective made the moment even more memorable for me as a photographer.
Looking back, this photograph serves as more than just documentation of a camp session. It represents the atmosphere that made the week so impactful—the joy, connection, and collective excitement shared among everyone in the room. Sometimes all it takes is a small window and a different perspective to fully appreciate just how powerful those moments really are.

Some graduation photos capture tradition, while others completely redefine what graduation photography can look like. This image falls firmly into the second category. At first glance, the photo feels elegant and minimalistic—a graduate posed high above the curved architecture of the building, holding her cap confidently against an open evening sky. But behind the simplicity of the final image is a moment that honestly felt far more intense in person than the photograph might suggest.
The location itself immediately changes the mood of the image. Positioned high along the curved edge of the structure, the graduate appears almost suspended above the city, framed by the massive architecture beneath her and the endless sky surrounding her. The scale of the building creates an incredible sense of height and openness that instantly draws your attention upward. From below, the shot feels cinematic and dramatic, transforming a standard graduation portrait into something much more artistic and memorable.
Even though the final image looks calm and graceful, capturing it required a surprising amount of trust, coordination, and confidence. Heights always appear less intimidating in photographs than they do in real life, and standing near the edge of such a tall structure definitely introduced a level of nervousness during the shoot. Safety and communication became especially important in a moment like this because the goal was never to create something reckless—it was to create something visually bold while still maintaining control and intentionality throughout the process.
What made the image work so well was the graduate herself. She fully committed to the vision of the shot and positioned herself perfectly to match the elegance of the setting. Rather than appearing stiff or hesitant, she carried herself with confidence and composure, which completely transformed the mood of the image. Her posture feels relaxed yet refined, and the way she lifts her graduation cap toward the sky adds a celebratory element without overpowering the sophistication of the composition.
That collaboration between photographer and subject is one of the most rewarding parts of creative portrait photography. Ideas like this only succeed when both people are equally invested in the process. When a subject trusts the creative direction and contributes their own energy to the shoot, the final images naturally become stronger. In this case, the graduate brought a level of enthusiasm and confidence that elevated the concept beyond just a unique location. She understood the vision and helped bring it to life in a way that felt authentic rather than forced.
The architecture also plays a huge role in the storytelling of the image. The sweeping curve of the building naturally guides the viewer’s eye upward toward the graduate, emphasizing both her accomplishment and the dramatic scale of the environment. The large lettering across the structure grounds the image in an academic setting, while the open sky creates negative space that keeps the composition feeling clean and uncluttered. There is a balance between grandeur and simplicity that gives the photograph its polished feel.
One of my favorite aspects of this image is how it combines elegance with adventure. Graduation photography can sometimes become repetitive because so many portraits rely on the same poses and locations. By pushing the creative direction further and using the environment in an unexpected way, the session immediately became more memorable. The image still communicates accomplishment and celebration, but it does so with far more personality and individuality than a traditional portrait might.
It also highlights something important about photography in general: creativity becomes much easier when the people you work with are willing to fully participate in the process. Some of the best images happen when subjects are open to trying unconventional ideas and trusting the creative vision behind them. That shared excitement creates momentum during a shoot and often leads to photographs that feel far more natural and impactful.
Looking back, this image represents more than just a graduation portrait. It reflects collaboration, trust, creativity, and the willingness to step outside of traditional expectations—literally and creatively. While the height of the location certainly made the moment feel a little intimidating, the final result made every second worth it. The photograph feels elegant, bold, and timeless all at once, proving that sometimes the best creative ideas come from taking a perspective to a whole new level.

During the summer of 2024, I had the incredible opportunity to serve as a photographer at Woodlands Camp, and throughout the entire summer there were countless moments worth remembering. From high-energy games and late-night worship sessions to quiet conversations between campers and leaders, every week seemed filled with moments that carried genuine joy and meaning. But out of all the photos I captured during the summer, one moment stands above the rest as my personal favorite: witnessing a camper publicly declare their faith through baptism in the lake.
There was something uniquely powerful about that evening. The atmosphere around the lake felt different from the normal excitement that filled camp throughout the week. Instead of loud games or fast-paced activities, there was a sense of anticipation and reverence shared among everyone gathered there. Campers, counselors, and staff stood around the shoreline watching closely as one student stepped into the water, preparing to take a meaningful step of faith in front of their peers and leaders.
As a photographer, moments like this carry a completely different emotional weight. Normally, my focus is divided between technical decisions—lighting, composition, timing, and camera settings. But during the baptism, it became difficult not to get emotionally invested in what was happening right in front of me. This was not simply another scheduled camp activity or another photo opportunity. It was a deeply personal and spiritual moment for the camper involved, and everyone present could feel the significance of it.
When the camper was lowered into the water and raised back up, the entire atmosphere erupted with emotion. Cheers echoed across the lake, campers clapped and celebrated, and several people around me immediately began crying tears of joy. It was one of those rare moments where emotion spread through the crowd almost instantly. You could feel the unity among everyone there as they celebrated together. There was no hesitation or self-consciousness—just genuine excitement and support for someone taking a public step of obedience in their faith.
One of the most memorable parts of the moment was the sound. The cheers, applause, and celebration created what truly felt like a joyful noise rising across the water. It was loud, emotional, and completely authentic. The kind of reaction that cannot be staged or recreated. It was clear that the moment meant something not only to the camper being baptized, but also to the entire community gathered around the lake. Everyone seemed fully present, fully engaged, and fully aware that they were witnessing something deeply meaningful.
Photographing baptisms is also unique because there is such a balance between celebration and intimacy. On one hand, the moment is public and communal, filled with cheering and excitement. On the other hand, it is deeply personal for the individual stepping into the water. Capturing both aspects in a photograph requires paying attention not only to the central action itself, but also to the reactions surrounding it—the smiles, tears, raised hands, and emotional expressions from friends and counselors nearby.
Looking back on the summer, this image represents far more than just a single event at camp. It captures the heart of why places like Woodlands Camp can have such a lasting impact on people. Beyond the games, activities, and entertainment, camp creates space for meaningful conversations, spiritual growth, and life-changing moments. This baptism became a visible reminder of that deeper purpose.
What makes the photograph especially meaningful to me personally is that I was not just documenting the moment from a distance—I felt emotionally connected to it as it unfolded. Sometimes photography allows you to observe important moments, but other times it pulls you directly into them. This was one of those moments. Even behind the camera, it was impossible not to feel the joy, emotion, and significance shared by everyone standing around that lake.
At the end of the summer, many photos documented exciting events, beautiful scenery, and unforgettable friendships. But this image remains my favorite because it captures something eternal. Tears were shed, joyful celebration filled the air, and most importantly, God was glorified through a moment of faith and obedience that no one there would soon forget.
